Just weeks after the college football season concluded, Bill Belichick has dismissed offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens and special teams coordinator Mike Priefer from his staff at UNC.
Belichick inherited Kitchens, as the former Browns coach had been at UNC since 2023. With the Tar Heels, he had served as tight ends coach and run game coordinator (2023-24), interim coach after Mack Brown’s firing (2024) and then offensive coordinator under Belichick this season.
Priefer spent 20 years coaching special teams in the NFL with the Jaguars, Giants, Chiefs, Broncos, Vikings and Browns before he joined Belichick's first staff at North Carolina. The Tar Heels averaged 18.3 yards per kick return which was 105th in the nation this season. They were 77th in average punt return yardage.
