Indian rescuers used helicopters on Thursday to pluck to safety people stranded by flood waters in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand two days after a sudden inundation and landslide killed four people, while more than a dozen were still missing.

Following a devastating mudslide in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district, 274 people have been rescued, while 59 remain missing.

A flash flood swept through a village in the Himalayas in northern India on Tuesday. At least 50 people are missing and four are dead, with the toll expected to rise. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami told a local news outlet at least 190 people have been rescued. “The disaster has completely hit the entire Dharali,” said Dhami.
