The suit is in response to steps the Trump administration has taken to target cities and jurisdictions that don’t assist with federal immigration enforcement.

The city of Portland is joining a lawsuit with other sanctuary cities challenging the Trump administration’s threat to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities. The lawsuit will be filed today in United States District Court of Northern California, and is led by the city and county of San Fransisco and by the county of Santa Clara.

Portland will now join a coalition of local governments suing the Trump administration for executive orders and actions that harm sanctuary cities and states.

The South Portland Police Department called the incident an “active situation” in a statement made at 4:25 p.m. Wednesday.
