The second total lunar eclipse of the year happens at the start of September with the moon completely eclipsed for over an hour.

A Blood Moon or total lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth and Moon are lined up. That means the Earth moves directly in between the Sun and Moon, blocking the sunlight. The Moon then enters the shadow created behind the Earth, creating an eclipse. As the light of the Sun passes through the Earth's atmosphere, the sunlight scatters.

On Sept 7, 2025, a dramatic "blood moon" will rise as Earth experiences its second total lunar eclipse of the year.
