Mexico's Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said Tuesday that he will meet with Trump administration officials in Washington on Thursday in what he called “the first conversation” in a series of negotiations between the two countries.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has threatened to sue Google after the tech company changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on Google Maps. President Trump signed an executive order declaring the name change.
The name change to Gulf of America is the first since the 1540s where various maps referred to it as the Mexican Gulf, Golpho de la Nueva España, and, finally Gulf of Mexico.
The country has argued that the mapping policy violates Mexican sovereignty because the U.S. only has jurisdiction over around 46% of the Gulf.
