A member of Kyle Shanahan's staff at the San Francisco 49ers, declined an interview to become the head coach of the New York Jets for the 2025 NFL season.
Following his dismissal as head coach of the New York Jets, Robert Saleh has wasted no time finding his next opportunity in the NFL. The former Jets leader has returned to the San Francisco 49ers, where he previously thrived as defensive coordinator.
Brant Boyer was announced Monday as the 49ers’ new special teams coordinator, a role he held the past nine season with the Jets, where he overlapped and worked under coach Robert Saleh, who was re-hired Friday as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator.
The Jets fired Saleh in the middle of the season, naming Jeff Ulbrich as the interim head coach. While they interviewed Ulbrich for the big job, they chose to go a different route, naming former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as their new head coach.
The 49ers on Monday hired former New York Jets assistant coach Brant Boyer as special teams coordinator. Boyer replaces Brian Schneider, who served as 49ers’ special teams coordinator for the past three seasons. Schneider was fired the day after the 49ers finished the regular season with a 6-11 record.
According to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, Sorensen won’t be returning to the 49ers coaching staff after being fired as their defensive coordinator after the 2024 season. Shanahan told reporters at his end of season press conference that he hoped Sorensen would stay on the staff, possibly as the special teams coordinator.
This former 49ers coach could be back in the NFL soon after taking a one-year hiatus in 2024 to join the Jets.
Glenn, who was the Lions' defensive coordinator the past four seasons, said he would not be calling the defense for the Jets. Wilks has done the job and has head coaching experience.
New York interviewed over 30 combined candidates for their open general manager and head coach openings with a wide range of different people from different backgrounds. In the end, Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn were the two people who were the clear choice for both the 33rd Team and the Jets as a collective.
The band is back together with the 49ers re-hiring Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator, but one former bandmate will have to watch the show go on without him from the opposite end of the country.
The New York Jets may be no exception. Especially at the Senior Bowl. But as the practice schedules quickly go on during the 2025 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, the Jets have a very clear reality hitting their organization. There isn't any quarterback worth falling in love with at this point in the pre-draft process.
