Google renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for U.S.-based users of Google Maps. Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum said the renaming is “incorrect.”

The name change to Gulf of America is the first since the 1540s where various maps referred to it as the Mexican Gulf, Golpho de la Nueva España, and, finally Gulf of Mexico.

The country has argued that the mapping policy violates Mexican sovereignty because the U.S. only has jurisdiction over around 46% of the Gulf.
