One of the biggest storylines heading into the New York Mets' 2025 season was whether star shortstop Francisco Lindor would be named the franchise's fifth official captain, and the first since David Wright.
The New York Mets need an outfielder and could acquire one in a trade with the San Diego Padres by parting with David Peterson.
While neither Francisco Lindor or Fernando Tatis Jr. are part of the talks, the teams are engaging in trade discussions.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, right-hander Nolan McLean is “off limits” in trade talks. That shouldn’t come as a surprise. McLean looked like an ace in the making during his first taste of big-league action this past season. He’ll enter next season near the top of the Mets’ starting staff.
Any hope that New York Mets fans had about All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso and closer Edwin Díaz reversing course and returning to Queens officially ended on Friday, Dec. 12, when they officially signed their respective contracts with the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers.
The New York Mets lost two superstars this week, but also lost a breakout pitcher from the minor leagues in the Rule 5 Draft.
