For the first time since Sunday's rolling car-to-car gun battle near Pier 39, San Francisco Mayor London Breed is speaking out about the incident.

Pier 39 officials turned to the Marine Mammal Center to figure out what to do about the sea lions. The final decision, Ratner said, was to let the sea lions stay and coexist with humans.

It's the most sea lions that have shown up there in 15 years, Sheila Chandor, Harbormaster for Pier 39 Marina, told ABC 7. On April 29, the pier tweeted that there were around 820 sea lions.

Pier 39 is a busy tourist area that counts among its population a large number of sea lions. According to pier39.com, the sea lions appeared in the fall of 1989 after the Loma Prieta earthquake.

Pier 39 anniversary celebration The pier will celebrate its 35th anniversary every Saturday in October, with festivities open to the public: a DJ at 6 p.m., followed by fireworks at 8:30 p.m.

"Pier 39 was probably affected more because it was so tourist-based," said Kathryn Erickson, owner of the Crystal Shop and Barbary Coast Boxes. Even so, businesses are starting to make a comeback.
