President Trump helped end a simmering conflict between Cambodia and Thailand in the summer, but the ceasefire didn't last long.
President Trump is expected to speak with Thailand’s prime minister on Friday, as he seeks burnish his self-styled image as a peacemaker by intervening in a border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia that entered its fifth day.
President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he will try again to stop fighting between Thailand and Cambodia after a ceasefire he helped broker in July collapsed this week. Trump, at a rally in Pennsylvania, listed the wars he said he has halted, when he mentioned the fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbors, which broke out again on Monday.
Trump announced the agreement to restart the ceasefire in a social media posting on Friday following calls with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.
The escalation broke the ceasefire brokered in July by Trump who threatened to halt trade talks with the two countries unless they ended the fight.
Thailand may escalate against Cambodia, weighing fuel and maritime curbs, with decisions due at a Monday security meeting.
