Aug 3, 2023 · The Supreme Court is the trial court of unlimited original jurisdiction; but it generally hears cases that are outside the jurisdiction of other trial courts of more limited jurisdiction. In New York City, the Court exercises civil jurisdiction and jurisdiction over felony cases (in which a sentence in excess of one year may be imposed).

The Supreme Court, Civil Branch, New York County is a trial-level court, the highest such court for civil cases in the state court system in New York County. Cases are decided in this court in the first instance.

Aug 3, 2023 · There are four Appellate Divisions of the Supreme Court, one in each of the State's four Judicial Departments. These Courts resolve appeals from judgments or orders of the superior courts of original jurisdiction in civil and criminal cases, and review civil appeals taken from the Appellate Terms and the County Courts acting as appellate courts.

Oct 7, 2024 · The New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA) has instituted a pilot program to provide free representation to eligible litigants who have filed appeals in this Court in Article 78 proceedings, family law matters, and matrimonial disputes.

The Supreme Court is the state-wide trial court with the broadest jurisdiction, both in criminal and civil matters. It can hear virtually any type of case brought before it, with the exception of claims brought against the state which must be heard by the Court of Claims.
