The six pieces of Bizet's 'Chants du Rhin' are supported by as many poems and a 'Prélude', invoking the Rhine as a treasure house of history and romance. The sequence of poems suggests a day's journey down the river, the music growing in sophistication with each piece until finally 'Le retour' brings the party home, weary and content, and with the everlasting spell of the river etched in our minds.
