This French Onion soup is so special and really so easy to make. Remember to use the boxed beef broth NOT THE ONES IN CANS. THEY ATE TO SALTY. The grandchildren loved it for a light Christmas Day lunch. Hannah cooked a big Christmas supper for us on Christmas night. I'm ready for some down home cooking now. Purple hull peas and corn bread. What is your go to meal when you're tired of all the rich foods ??? | Cooking with Brenda Gantt

Beef Stew Everyone was starving when we got home from church. They didn’t want to wait for me to cook cornbread so we had crackers. The stew has delicious. Those ingredients made two gallons of stew. I added the cost from my grocery bill. Then divided by 32 cups( 16 cups in one gallon. ) I made two gallons. It came out that each cup cost 62 cents. I ate 3 cups so my lunch cost $1.86. Talk about getting a delicious but cheap meal—- this is the winner. | Cooking with Brenda Gantt

Barbecued Spare Ribs This is one meal we have to have every now and then. I know it’s a big purchase for a small family, but they are so delicious. Here is what I do with the left over ribs. Pull the meat off the bones, chop it up for BQ sandwiches with dill pickles. Fix a skillet of French fries and you have another meal. Waste not want not !! | Cooking with Brenda Gantt

Baked beans are eaten a lot at my house. We enjoy them with Boston Butt, Baby back ribs, hot dog and hamburgers. Long side of this we think we have to have potato salad or slaw. I always amazes me how we all are creatures of habit. I always sit in the same pew at church, part my hair on the same side. Park my truck in the same parking space at the grocery store and put my right shoe on before my left. Are you a creature of habit too ? | Cooking with Brenda Gantt

You can make gravy out of any kind of grease. Today, I'm using sausage grease. I'm adding water. But you can make it out of milk if you desire. When I'm frying chicken I make my gravy out of milk. brendaganttbook.com | Cooking with Brenda Gantt

Y'all the persimmon pie turned out delicious. If I get the chance to do it again I will add a teaspoon more of each spice. I think it's fun to make up recipes. Tell us all some kind of thing you made up in your kitchen. I bet it turned out great. I made up some hot pockets one time for George's and me. They were so good that we started making them often. Buy the way Hoffman Media called and said - The Southern Mirror coffee table book will be mailed at the end of October. I'm going to wrap them

Biscuit Making — this art is very old. Your grandmothers before you made biscuits this way to feed their families. Some mamas made biscuits in wooden bowls, some used China bowls and some mamas used pottery bowls like me , but the main thing to remember is they DID IT. Please don’t let this art die !! Teach yourself how , then pass this skill on to your children. Help them be successful so that they will always be able to sit down with their family on cold frosty mornings and enjoy a hot buttere

Fried Chicken This is our favorite southern meat. We all love the crispy texture and the delicious flavor. It’s also good for people who live alone because you can just fry a couple of pieces and save the rest for chicken salad or boiling for dumplings. That way you get three meals out of one chicken. Get your water to a hard rolling boil before you put your corn in it. Then boil your corn three minutes at a real hard boil with a lid on the pot. Slather it with butter, then salted, then take a good bite. My daddy liked field corn. I like it too. It's the kind of corn that's harder more firm and that you feed to cows and pigs and chickens. Have you ever eaten field corn? If not, I bet your parents loved it. #CookingwithBrendaGantt brendaganttbook.com | Cooking with Brenda Gantt
