Qigiq, a Snowy Owl and Raptor-in-Residence here at the Alaska Raptor Center, was found starving and injured along the roadside in 2012. It was presumed that he had been surviving on road kill and was struck by a car, resulting in severe multiple fractures to his left humerus. After a few months of observations and the best efforts of our rehabilitative staff, Qigiq was deemed non-flighted and unable to be released. Have you ever wondered where an owl’s ears are? They’re not where you’d expect! Hidden behind those mesmerizing eyes, an owl’s large ear openings are tucked beneath their head feathers, out of sight but incredibly effective. These hidden ears help owls hunt by sound, even in the dark! It’s just one of the many silent superpowers that make owls such extraordinary predators. #OwlSecrets #OwlEars #DidYouKnow | Alaska Raptor Center

Here at the Alaska Raptor Center, we work hard to provide the best possible care for our residents and this includes checking their weight. Training a bird to voluntarily go to a scale, and to accept our hands for a keel check, is an important part of their daily care. Tootsie, a Northern Saw-whet Owl, weighs 83 grams. #owls | Alaska Raptor Center
