Thomas Jefferson’s watch key was both an essential tool and a marker of loss. Jefferson used it to wind his pocket watch, and it was a memento that contained a woven lock of hair from his late wife, Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson, who died in 1782 after ten years of marriage. On the reverse is inscribed: “Martha W. Jefferson / Born 19 Oct. 1748 / Died 6 Sept. 1782.” This watch key and Martha Jefferson’s bureau are on display at Monticello this month. We’re back in Monticello’s Archaeology Lab! 🧪 While discoveries begin in the field, it’s in the lab where artifacts truly come to life. Every object is carefully cleaned, cataloged, analyzed, and entered into Monticello’s Digital Archaeological Archive of Comparative Slavery (DAACS) database. In today’s video, lab analyst Chris Devine takes us behind the scenes to show how this essential work helps piece together the stories of the past. 🔍 | Thomas Jefferson's Monticello

Today is Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the legal end of slavery in the United States. As an International Site of Conscience, we encourage our visitors, both in person and online, to study the history of slavery in America and the connections to systemic racism today. In 2015, we had the honor of welcoming civil rights icon John Lewis to Monticello as the recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Citizen Leadership.
