These bright orange fish, called garibaldi, are the California State Marine Fish. That means they’re specially protected. Interestingly, the males of this species are highly protective of their nests, which they guard and tend to while the fertilized eggs develop into baby garibaldis. Juvenile garibaldis are bright orange as well and have iridescent blue speckles that fade as they mature. Come see them in our Ecosystems gallery today! Garibaldi fish are known for their vibrant orange or red-orange coloration, which makes them stand out in the underwater environment. They are relatively small, reaching lengths of up to 12 inches (30 cm), and are often found in rocky reefs and kelp forests along the California coast.
